Taiwan authorities launch probe into Microsoft’s Vista sales

TAIPEI – Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission said Monday it has launched an investigation into whether Microsoft Corp is abusing its monopoly status to force consumers to buy its Windows Vista operating system.

The probe came after a complaint filed by the Consumers’ Foundation, which accused Microsoft of violating Taiwan’s fair trade act by ending sales of its Windows XP operating system in most computers from June and forcing consumers to upgrade to Vista.

“We are just beginning to probe Microsoft’s conduct, looking at whether it uses the monopoly advantage in the market to sell Vista. We want to ensure fair market competition will be maintained,” said a Fair Trade Commission official.

The investigation is expected to take at least six months, the official said.

“Since Microsoft is a multinational company, it is possible for us to have a longer probe,” she said.

According to Taiwan’s fair trade act, no enterprises are allowed to abuse their market power by directly or indirectly preventing any rivals from competing through unfair means.

The official said if the commission determines Microsoft has violated fair trade rules, the company will be required to stop the conduct and face a fine of up to 25 million Taiwan dollars (799,000 US).

Surely Microsoft are doing almost the opposite to taking advantage of a dominant position. If you believe all the MS Bashers, they have swapped a popular and dominant product for a crap one that no-one wants to buy. Certainly no-one is forcing people to buy a Windows PC anymore. There are plenty of places where you can buy a PC, a laptop or a MID (?) with Linux installed.

If stopping the sales of the worlds most predominant Desktop PC Operating System is “anti-competitive” then you really have to wonder if MS can ever do right for doing wrong?

If you want anti-competitive, see if you can find a company that sues anyone selling PC’s with their OS installed unless THEY made the PC. (like these guys for example)

Cygwin bringin’ *nix to windows

bring a little Linux into your world. Cygwin is an awesome program (shell? environment? whatever) that creates a Linux view of your Windows system. you get yourself a command prompt exactly like a Linux terminal. From here you can navigate around your C drive, do as many fast searches as you’d like, even run bash/ksh/whatever-sh scripts.

Cygwin (pronounced sɪɡwɪn) is a collection of tools developed to provide in Microsoft Windows a command line and programming interface familiar to Unix users.

It consists of two parts:

  • A DLL (cygwin1.dll) which acts as a Linux API emulation layer providing substantial Linux API functionality.
  • A collection of tools which provide Linux look and feel.

you shouldnt write that…

…what if a future employer sees that?

The Infinite possibilities that each day holds should stagger the mind. the number of experiences i COULD have is astoundingly high. we live trapped in loops. reliving a few days over and over, an only envision a handful of the paths that are laid out in front of us. we see the same thing each and everyday, and respond the same way. we think the same thoughts, each day a slight variation on the last, every moment, following the curves of societal norms. we act like if we could just get through day, then tomorrow our dreams will come true, chasing after those dreams is what we strive for.

NO i don’t have all the answers. i can’t see what each moment could become. i do, however, know one thing: the solution doesn’t involve watering down my every little idea and creative impulse for the sake of some day easing my fit into a mold. it doesn’t involve messing with my life to fit into someones expectations. it doesn’t involve constantly holding back for the fear of shaking things up.

i want to make this as clear and simple as i can.

I WILL NOT HOLD MY TONGUE I WILL SAY AND WRITE WHAT I WANT, REGARDLESS WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK OR SAY.

Heroic Age..

Heroic Age has definitely been the show with one of the most ambitious premises of the past season. While other series have dealt with the fate of the universe before, no other series does it with such a massive scale, no other series has armies as massive as with Heroic Age, and no other series has characters as powerful as some of the ones we see in here. This truly is a space-epic. The story tells of a Golden Age which once existed in this universe. They had the power to foresee the past and the future, they could create planets and stars, and sent out a message to the different tribes and races that populated the galaxy. Three races responded: the Silver Age, the Bronze Age and the Heroic Age. Then, as the Golden Age was about to leave the galaxy, a fourth Age responded: humans, or the Iron Age.

This would have been better if the characters were interesting to watch, but alas: they’re just too focused on the story. They either spend all of their time worrying or fighting, and the illusion of “depth” quickly vanishes from this series after a bunch of episodes. To add salt to the wound, nearly every member of the main cast is a teenager, eliminating any sense of realism this series already had, but worst of all, the male and female main characters have some major annoyances: they’re too perfect. The only flaw of the main female is that she’s too angsty and the main male just doesn’t have any flaws at all. This quickly becomes rather one-sided. The side-characters could have saved them, but a lot of them just lack development.

But lo and behold: this is one of those flawed series that manages to redeem itself in the end! Around episode seventeen or eighteen, the writers wake up and turn up the pacing three gears, and the plot finally starts getting interesting as it develops in the right way, into a finale that doesn’t disappoint. Sure, the first half is boring, but it does build up for the much better second half. While the last part was nowhere near the best part of the season, at least it managed to redeem the lacklustre first part. At least it’s not the opposite way.

you’ll like this one if you like epic science-fiction stories, because things can’t get more epic than this series, not necessarily in the good ways, but neither in the bad ways.
